Lubricant standards, terminology, and application guidance

Structured technical reference covering lubricant fundamentals, industry standards, specification terminology, and operating considerations for industrial and mobile equipment applications in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Technical reference for ISO VG 220 industrial gear oil, covering operating conditions, enclosed gear-system applications, viscosity behaviour, and specification requirements.

OPERATING CONTEXT

ISO VG 220 industrial gear oil is widely used within enclosed industrial gear systems operating under moderate-to-heavy load conditions across manufacturing, processing, materials-handling, and continuous-duty industrial applications. It is commonly specified where balanced viscosity performance, load-carrying capability, and oxidation resistance are required.

Heavy-duty ISO VG 220 industrial gear oils are commonly formulated for enclosed gear systems requiring EP performance, oxidation stability, corrosion protection, demulsibility behaviour, and antifoam performance under sustained industrial operating conditions.

The viscosity grade is defined by ISO 3448 and corresponds to a nominal kinematic viscosity of 220 mm²/s at 40°C.

Further viscosity-selection guidance is provided within the Industrial Gear Oil Viscosity Selection technical reference.

TYPICAL EQUIPMENT USE

ISO VG 220 is commonly selected for enclosed gear drives operating under sustained industrial loading and moderate operating-speed conditions.

  • Industrial reduction gearboxes
  • Conveyor drive systems
  • Materials-handling equipment
  • Manufacturing and processing plant
  • General enclosed gear drives
  • Circulating-oil lubrication systems

VISCOSITY BEHAVIOUR IN SERVICE

ISO VG 220 provides balanced lubricant-film thickness and circulation performance across a broad range of enclosed industrial gear applications.

Correct viscosity selection depends upon transmitted load, operating speed, thermal conditions, and gearbox configuration. Where operating temperatures increase or rotational speed decreases, higher-viscosity grades may be required to maintain adequate lubricant-film separation.

Surface-fatigue behaviour and lubricant-film performance are further discussed within the Micropitting and Surface Fatigue in Gear Systems reference.

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

ISO VG 220 industrial gear oils are commonly formulated to recognised industrial EP gearbox standards and OEM performance requirements.

  • DIN 51517 Part 3 CLP
  • ISO 12925-1 CKD
  • AGMA 9005
  • FZG load-stage performance requirements

Specification requirements commonly define oxidation stability, load-carrying capability, corrosion protection, demulsibility performance, micropitting resistance, and foaming-control performance.

Further specification guidance is available within the Industrial Gear Oil Specifications and Standards technical reference.

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT CONSIDERATIONS

ISO VG 220 industrial gear oils are commonly used within continuous-duty industrial environments where thermal stability, contamination control, and lubricant-condition monitoring influence gearbox reliability.

Moisture ingress, particulate contamination, elevated operating temperature, and extended-service operation may accelerate lubricant degradation if not properly controlled.

Further contamination-management guidance is provided within the Industrial Gear Oil Contamination Control reference.

COMPATIBILITY AND GRADE CONTROL

ISO VG 220 should only be substituted where permitted by the gearbox manufacturer or operating specification. Changes in viscosity grade may alter lubricant circulation, fluid-film thickness, thermal behaviour, and energy consumption.

When changing lubricant supplier or specification framework, compatibility with residual lubricant, filtration systems, seals, and additive chemistry should be confirmed.

Additional EP-performance guidance is outlined within the EP Additives in Industrial Gear Oils technical reference.
